Weather Balloons Employed to Smuggle Cigarettes Closed Airport in Lithuania
Balloons carrying a large quantity of cigarettes have caused flight disruptions in Lithuania, as the country's main airport was forced to close for hours when multiple of them entered the airspace of Lithuania.
Flight Disruptions
The airport closure led to thirty canceled flights disrupting six thousand travelers, with authorities cautioning that delays might continue throughout Monday.
National Security Measures
Authorities reported that 25 meteorological balloons were detected entering Lithuania from neighboring Belarus, with two balloons ending up right above the aviation facility.
Up to 14 of the atmospheric instruments sent during the weekend passed through the capital region, which is home to Lithuania's primary metropolis and close to the Belarusian boundary.
Contraband Recovery
At least 11 balloons containing eighteen thousand packages of illegal tobacco products have now been retrieved, though additional discoveries are expected, according to customs agents.
Regional Smuggling Pattern
Although causing problems, authorities noted that "Meteorological equipment transporting smuggled items - tobacco products originating in Belarus - are nothing new in the Baltic region and Poland."
To date in the current year, numerous meteorological balloons have been recorded entering Lithuania from Belarus, while nearly a thousand were recorded last year.
Regional Consequences
Meanwhile, the north-eastern Podlaskie region, which also borders Belarus, has registered in excess of numerous instances in which contraband was flown from its adjacent country employing the balloons.
Criminal Methodology
When questioned about why smugglers utilize a approach that remains particularly vulnerable to weather factors rather than easier to manage drones, representatives elaborated that "Atmospheric equipment are simple mechanisms used by contraband transporters - they are more economical than drones for transporting cigarettes from Belarus."
Security Service Goals
Representatives further stated that "The objective of our agencies is to capture the greatest possible volumes of smuggled items and to detain organisers and participants so that such operations become not financially viable and do not pose risk to commercial air travel."
European Tensions
Such border infiltrations occur during a period of increased concerns in Europe following numerous drone incursions that have caused air traffic disruption across the continent.
Recent incidents in nearby states have caused EU officials to accelerate discussions about enhancing aerial security throughout the continent.
