This New Horror Film Has Debuted on Streaming, and It Might Make or Break Your Romantic Bond.

Here's a test for long-term couples who appreciate the horror genre: Get comfortable with your significant other and watch Together. This 2025 indie hit has now made its online premiere via Hulu. At first glance, it may seem like typical physical horror, but beneath Together lies a deep contemplation about the ways we decide to love our partners.

An Introductory Film Investigating Relationship Dynamics

Together marks the first full-length movie for director Michael Shanks. It stars actors Alison Brie and Dave Franco as Tim and Millie, partners that have stayed together for a decade. Having wed in reality in 2017, Franco and Brie bring a special spark to their roles, masterfully depicting both the joys and frustrations of a committed partnership.

The plot begins when the couple move from the metropolis to the countryside for her career. A commonly used plot device, admittedly, but that’s largely where the tropes conclude. Together evolves into as much a psychological exploration of the couple's dynamic as it is a film about physical terror.

A Supernatural Catalyst

While hiking near their country house, a storm hits, and Millie and Tim tumble into an hole in the earth. After being trapped overnight there and eventually escaping, a supernatural entity starts to affect the pair. This force compels a paranormal intimacy between them that goes far beyond emotional intimacy.

The entire film is a gradually intensifying of scares, interspersing elements of dreamlike terrors, disturbing (but never too gross) biological grotesqueries, and surprisingly comedic dialogue (sometimes in the middle of something horrific). The director orchestrates these parts expertly and delivers them in a slowly mounting atmosphere of fear.

Complex Characterizations

A significant portion of Together is solely the two lead actors, and they skillfully illustrate numerous complexities to the characters’ relationship. Millie's sense of self and emotional bond is deteriorating due to a distance. Her unspoken irritation of Tim for his unwillingness to focus on anything other than his floundering music career gradually emerges.

Conversely, Tim senses confinement and separated by Millie, who’s the impetus they’ve relocated rural and removed from his network of friends. He fears the idea of totally forfeiting his personal autonomy in his partner. This fear is intensified by the fact he can’t drive and is dependent on Millie for transportation.

Shanks’ smartest move is that he never makes either of his characters the clear bad guy.

The couple face the kind of problems that arise in any relationship after ten years. Fundamentally, they still love one another. They share moments of joy, offer support, and open up at times. But beneath it all, there’s an inescapable feeling of questioning about their future together.

Allegory and Meaning

While the paranormal elements in Together act as a metaphor for these anxieties of excessive reliance and giving oneself over to another person, the symbolism does not come across as hamfisted or pretentious. Instead, these more disturbing, unsettling scenes offer a ideal counterpart to the character-driven drama. Both the frights and the fights enhance each other in a mutually beneficial way.

A Controversial Conclusion

Together’s ending, which remains unspoiled, has left audiences divided on the film’s ultimate message about unhealthy partnerships. Reports indicate that unattached audience members have interpreted the film as a strong argument for avoiding commitment. Meanwhile, some couples having disagreements found that the film ended up guiding them to make up.

Whether you’re single or coupled up, your own response could act as a telling indicator of how you perceive partnership. Will the finale plant a sense of discomfort and fear, or a positive outlook on love? Will you recognize your own traits in either protagonist and scream at your TV, or simply look at your significant other and utter, “We could get through that together”?

Whatever the case may be, Together is an exploration you can experience today.

Together is streaming on Hulu now.
