Matteo Cancellieri Shows Flashing Moments of Brilliance in Silver Lining for Haywire Lazio

The mood at the Stadio Olimpico was decidedly gloomy this past Saturday. Lazio were trailing against Torino, a side that had let in 10 goals while managing only two goals in their last five league matches. Supporters from the Curva Nord were concluding their most recent demonstration in a continuous dispute with president Claudio Lotito.

The Campaign Coming Unstitched?

Was Lazio's season unraveling, or was there ever a binding element holding it together in the first place? Lazio reinstated Maurizio Sarri as head coach during the off-season, only for him publicly stated that the board had failed to disclose a ban on new signings they were facing for accounting issues. Speculation that he might quit were unfounded, but he acknowledged that Lotito had "deceived" him.

The Biancocelesti became as messy on the pitch as they were off it, overcoming Verona 4-0 and Genoa 3-0 but losing the remaining initial five matches, which included the capital clash. From one game to the next, it's been difficult to tell if they are improving or collapsing.

The Youngster's Unforeseen Comeback

At least one man remained positive throughout. Matteo Cancellieri wasn't originally meant to be at Lazio during this campaign. He spent the previous campaign at Parma as a loanee and, at the start of the off-season, his owning club were advocating for him to stay there for another season. The signing restriction led to a change of plans. Lazio could not afford to reduce their roster lacking backup options.

He joined initially under Sarri's first spell, then a 20-year-old alumnus of Verona's academy. He recorded 20 Serie A appearances in Lazio colors in the 2022-23 season, almost all of those from the bench. Their former sporting director, Igli Tare, who left following that term, later stated Sarri of "telling everyone Cancellieri would be a star then never playing him."

Discovering His Best Role

It's possible the coach was persistently working to determine the nature of Cancellieri's abilities. Originally described as a wide forward when he joined, Cancellieri nevertheless spent most of that campaign as an unconvincing alternative to Ciro Immobile as center forward. In 63 appearances while playing for Empoli and Parma over the last two seasons, he scored seven times. Shoehorn
